Driving The Single Horse 101

  • Bitterroot Valley, MT 784 Arena Rd. Hamilton, MT 59840 (map)

Learn how to drive the single horse with an experienced horse as your teacher!

This clinic will introduce the never-ever or beginner driver to driving the single horse on a two wheeled cart.

If you have always wanted to learn, but not sure where to start or what questions to ask, or do not have your own horse and equipment yet, you will find this all-day clinic packed with useful information and hands-on opportunities to safely get you pointed in the right direction.

With only 3 participants driving at any time, you will get plenty of one-on-one instruction!

3 experienced driving horses and 3 carts will be provided, and 2 students will share one horse.

I will introduce you to:

·         Harnessing, understanding function of the harness and proper adjustment

·         Line and whip handling and understanding communication with your horse.

·         Hitching the single horse, correct adjustment of horse and cart and understanding the importance of it

·         The role of the helper / header

·         Using patterns and obstacles, we will work on and learn basic driving techniques, such as how loss of forward motion and loosing connection through the lines impacts your driving; the difference between “driving” your horse around a corner and “pulling” him around the corner and driving with focus and precision.

·         You will be hands on harnessing / unharnessing and hitching / unhitching “your” horse with your lesson partner.

·         You and your partner will trade off driving

·         Handout included

Limited to 6 drivers. Must be 18 to participate.

Cost:                      $300.00 / person

Auditing:             $30.00 / person

Deposit:               $150.00 non refundable. Refundable only if I can fill your spot!

If completing this 101 clinic, you may also sign up for the Spring Tune Up Clinic on May 24, 2026, if you would like to continue working on your driving skills.
