Spring Tune Up Driving Clinic

  • Skalkaho Stables 784 Arena Rd. Hamilton, MT 59840 (map)

Take your driving skills to the next level!

Advance, refine or trouble shoot your driving skills!

Regardless of your level of experience, you will take away “tools” that will help you take your driving to the next level. Whether you are a beginner, a pleasure / recreational driver or you like to enter a few shows every now and then, you will be able to apply these techniques to better communicate with your driving animals.

Singles and teams welcome.

(If you have participated in the Driving 101 clinic the day before, you may also sign up for this clinic with one of my horses and cart.)

In this one-day clinic we will cover:

·         Line and whip handling and understanding communication with our driving horses.

·         For teams: Understanding team line adjustment.

·         Understanding the difference between “cueing” and “driving” your single horse or team versus “pulling” and “following”.

·         The ever-important outside line and why overbending our horses causes them to lock up.

·         Using lots of patterns and some obstacles, we will work on driving with focus and precision to practice the above techniques and the importance of forward motion.

·         Transitions and speed control – do things fall apart when you add speed?

·         Backing, fanning, and docking – does your horse lock up when you are backing or fanning, doesn’t back straight, throws his head?

·         Small groups allow for plenty of one-on-one instruction: the number of participants will be divided into two groups and each group will drive in the morning and again in the afternoon.
