Groundwork for the Driving Horse & Understanding Ground Driving the Single Horse

  • Van Dyke Arena 1625 Masonic Home Rd. Helena, MT 59602 United States (map)

It takes time, commitment and some physical fitness to train your horse to drive. I need to teach you the skills, so you can teach your horse. I get many requests from folks that would like to train their own horse. Here’s where I start!

·         If you ever thought of teaching your own horse how to drive, but don’t know how to get started, this two day progressive clinic will introduce you the steps I take in the first 4 weeks of a 12 – 14 week training program. Each step builds on the previous one, breaking down the process into small pieces.

·         These are also the same steps I use to fine tune any driving or riding horse, or:

·         To evaluate a horse that is supposed to be broke to drive, but we are not sure of his training background. Covering all the basics from the ground up will uncover any possible weak spots or holes.

·         As the trainer of your own horse, you need to understand and master these steps before you and your horse can move to more advanced training.

·         You will be using your own horse for this clinic, but broke driving horses will be used for some of the exercises.

·         A broke horse can also be provided for students that would like to learn these techniques, but do not have a horse.

Cost:                        $450 / student / weekend

Auditing:                 $20 / person / day

Deposit:                  $50% non refundable unless I can fill your spot

 Limited to 8 participants

Must be 18

We will cover:

·         Why groundwork on halter and lead?

·         Connecting the feet to the lines

·         Direct & Drive

·         Single line driving

·         Line and whip management

·         Ground driving techniques for the single horse

·         Ground driving the single horse with a load

Understand that you will not be getting all the steps perfect in two days! Every step builds on the

previous one and as the clinic progresses you will discover which steps need reinforcing. You will

go home with lots of homework and tools in your tool box.
